Together with the North Queensland Cowboys rugby league team, Navarre Minerals was proud to present the Obe Geia Challenge, a rugby league competition for ten to twelve year old primary school children.

Held on exquisite Palm Island, the competition brought together nine Townsville schools and two from the island for some healthy competition.

Presented with support from SeaLink Queensland and Palm Island Aboriginal Shire Council, the competition saw each team play four pool games each ahead of the grand final between St Clare’s Catholic School and Kelso State School, with Kelso running in 4 tries to 2 to take this year’s title.

The Obe Geia challenge is named after Cowboys legend Obediah “Obe” Geia, who was the first indigenous Palm Island resident to play for the National Rugby League.

General Manager Mark Brown from Navarre said “Navarre is all about sustainability and providing support for education,” in an on-ground interview on the day.

The Obe Geia Challenge was started in 2009 to bring communities together and promote inclusion in North Queensland.
